FDA Approves First Drug for Obese Dogs

Can you believe it? Perhaps this is a new low. Not content with destroying human health in the pursuit of their fortunes, Pfizer, in league with the usual suspects, is now attacking man's best friend. Now drug-induced illness is going to the dogs. Poor unsuspecting and probably much-loved pets will be the silent victims of this new marketing initiative.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on January 5 announced the approval of Slentrol (dirlotapide), a prescription drug for the management of obesity in dogs.  Slentrol reduces appetite and fat absorption to produce weight loss.  A veterinarian will determine whether the dog should be treated, based on the dog's weight and general health. This continues the successful money-making, blame-sharing model perfected in the Big Pharma-physician arrangement with which we are all quite familiar.
